Emma Hartvig Swedish, b. 1990

Emma Hartvig (b. 1990, Sweden) is an artist recognized for her striking photographic explorations of femininity, intimacy, and identity. Her work, deeply influenced by cinematic and theatrical elements, examines the interplay between solitude and connection—capturing moments that blur the line between the private and the public self.

Through meticulously composed images, Hartvig challenges traditional representations of women, focusing on self-perception rather than objectification. Her ongoing visual study seeks to dismantle stigmas surrounding nudity while emphasizing inner strength and agency.

After earning a BA in photography from the University of the Arts London, Hartvig lived in Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, and Los Angeles—cities that have profoundly shaped her artistic perspective. She is now based in Vienna, where she develops long-term projects with the women of the city.

Her work has been exhibited in Milan, Vienna, London, and Bratislava, with upcoming solo shows in the U.S. in 2025. Hartvig’s photography has been featured in L'Oeil de la Photographie, Musée Magazine, Fisheye Magazine, Die Zeit, and AnOther Magazine, among others. She has also been included in notable publications such as Pools (Rizzoli, 2020) and The Swimming Pool in Photography (Hatje Cantz, 2017).
