  • Luke Oppenheimer, The Land of Gods and Eagles, 2020

    Luke Oppenheimer

The Land of Gods and Eagles, 2020

Luke Oppenheimer is a documentary photographer and visual storyteller with a background in agroforestry and sustainable farming from rural Oklahoma. He has lived and worked extensively throughout Latin America, as well as Central and South East Asia. His work focuses primarily on the complex relationship between rural communities, the landscapes they occupy, the wildlife they live next to and how the three shape one another and form each other's destinies, for better or for worse.

In the winter of 2020 Luke travelled to the Tien Shan mountains of Central Kyrgyzstan for one month to cover a story about Ottuk, a small village of shepherds suffering from severe predation on livestock by a growing population of wolves. Every year wolves eat up to one hundred horses and countless sheep from the village. In the frigid winter months the men of the village venture into the surrounding mountains to hunt the wolves and mitigate their losses. What started out as a month long trip turned into a five year long project about the people of Ottuk as he came to be accepted as a member of the village and adopted by one of the families. His body of work “Ottuk” is a deep dive into the dreams, hardships, joys and sorrows of the villagers, their ancient way of life and the landscape that shaped them.

There is a common expression in Kyrgyzstan: “It only takes one frost.” The implied second half of the saying is, “to lose everything.” In the Tien Shan mountains the temperatures can swiftly drop to -35° celsius. If the sheep are out overnight, they will all die. An entire family’s livelihood can be lost. A snow packed valley littered with frozen sheep, still upright like thousands of stone statuettes is a common sight and one that embodies the precarious existence of village life. Injuries, illnesses and blood feuds can change the course of a family’s history. The elements that carve away at the rocks, likewise chisel into the souls of the shepherds. What is left are the essentials of the human spirit. There is no pageantry or superfluous emotions; only principles and millennia old dogma shaped by necessity and hard won experience remain. Hospitality to strangers, filial piety, loyalty till death and the immense value of a person’s word form the substance of their inner domains and dictate their conduct. This is the world of Ottuk, tucked away in a valley, surrounded by mountains, steeped in legend and un-ravaged by time.

  • Mark de Paola, Chiara's Flower, 2018

    Mark de Paola

    Chiara's Flower, 2018
Mark de Paola is a New York City-based photographer. His pictorialist work as a still and motion artist has been driven by his studies of the neurobiology and cognitive psychology of human vision.

At age 21, de Paola’s first professional assignment was shooting a magazine cover of actor Henry Fonda. Since that time, de Paola has worked in New York, Los Angeles, and Milan, Mark shot countless campaigns, editorials, and covers, including those for Vogue Mexico, Vogue Spain, Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Interview Magazine.

De Paola's storytelling style quickly translated to directing television commercials where he directed and shot several hundred spots including those for Anheuser-Busch (aired on Super Bowl), Giorgio RED Perfume worldwide launch (exhibited in Museum of Modern Art N.Y.), Donna Karan, Neutrogena, English Ideas Cosmetics, Sony Cybershot, Ford Motorsports, Toyota, Ducati Motorcycles, and many more.

After working in commercial photography and film, de Paola turned his focus solely on the pursuit of fine art exhibition, monograph publication, commissions, and international education around the world. De Paola’s fine art work readily garnered critical acclaim and he was established as a reputable artist at the forefront of the conversation.

De Paola’s first fine art photographic series, 60 Seconds, was premiered at the Leica Gallery San Francisco, Leica Gallery Los Angeles, Leica Gallery Boston, and the Leica Gallery Ginza in Tokyo. 60 Seconds delves into a realm of abstract figures, fluidity, and
poetic forms, challenging and seducing the limits of motion contained within still image. Each photograph was taken with a handheld 60-second exposure. The limited edition signed 60 Seconds maquettes were released in Fall 2017.

De Paola debuted his second fine art series Art of Backstage, documenting the primal backstage environment of New York, London, and Milan fashion week. The series has since been exhibited at the Leica Gallery Ginza Six in Tokyo, the 7th Dali International Photo Festival in Dali, China, Caelum Gallery NYC, and the Leica Gallery Soho in New York City.

His third fine art series Recent Work debuted at PhotoFairs SF alongside Fred
Lyon, Ralph Gibson and Danny Wilcox Frazier with the Leica Gallery San Francisco in Winter 2018. Created over several years, the series includes portrait, nude, landscape, and inanimate object, and narrates de Paola’s memories of people, places and objects. The series premiered at the Leica Gallery Porto Fall 2018, opened in Summer 2019 at The Gallery at Leica Store San Francisco. The series then traveled to Milan, Italy in Fall 2019 for a solo exhibition at the Leica Gallery Milan as a part of the Triennale Museum’s Time of the Woman exhibition.
